Human Rights Lunch Online: “But I do this because there is no one else who is doing it”. Young transgender and nonbinary people as affect aliens in school

The Human Rights Lunch Online is a digital meeting place organized by the Human Rights Profile Area. On 12 December the online seminar welcomes Irina Schmitt from the Division of Gender Studies at Lund University.
Irina Schmitt, senior lecturer in gender studies at Lund University, researches trans- and queer-feminist educational practices in institutions where knowledge is produced and the national is inscribed, such as schools and colleges. In this seminar, Irina shares insights from interviews with 13 trans pupils in Swedish schools, focusing on how adults assign emotional responsibility to them. Drawing on queer and transfeminist theory—especially Sara Ahmed’s concept of “affect alien”— Irina explores how trans youth navigate affective tensions and how their experiences reveal potential for resistance and transformative change..
